Sun Belt Preview

Arkansas State

Last Year

With some key returning players last season, the Red Wolves were meant to contend for Sun Belt honors. Instead they limped to a 4-8 (3-5 SBC) record. They weren't a bad team, ranking 41st in total defense, and losing five close games including a 3 point loss to Iowa. They were hit hard by graduation too, losing their QB, RB and three top receivers on offense, as well as Sun Belt Player of the Year Alex Carrington on defense. Coach Dave Roberts has taken the Red Wolves to their only bowl game ('05), but has done little since, and is now on the hot seat. He's taken on a new offensive co-ordinator, Hugh Freeze, who will implement a spread attack in the hope of igniting a stagnant offense.

Offense

Losing a four-year starter would be a concern for most teams, but sophomore Ryan Aplin (65.3% comp, 889 yds, 3 TDs, 6 INTs) started 3 of the last 4 and won 2 of them. He's accurate and mobile (64-253-4). Redshirt freshman Phillip Butterfield is highly regarded and will back him up. Junior Derek Lawson (56-244-2) will start at Running Back. He ran for nearly 700 yards in '08 and should be decent in the new system. With the Fullback position becoming redundant, junior Jermaine Robertson (11-51-1) moves to Tailback and should see some carries. Four starting offensive linemen and many others with starting experience return, meaning the line should be the strength of the offense. RT Derek Newton is the best of the bunch, being voted 2nd Team SBC last year. LG Drew Hilton and RG Sifa Etu are back in their spots again this season, but LT Kiano Prater was replaced by junior Delano Moore, who started three games. Eric Allen, who started six, moves in at Center. There is plenty of depth here, and the unit should be much better this year. With three new receivers, Taylor Stockemer (16-347-1) looks to be the new top target. He'll be joined by senior Lucious Henderson, who didn't catch a pass last season, Allen Muse (6-57-0) and JUCO Dwayne Frampton, who was outstanding at LA Harbour CC, will be the main receivers. TE Kedrick Murry (7-109-0) returns, as does primary reserve Jeff Blake (6-48-1). If the players can pick up the new system quickly, the offense could be good this season.

Defense

You don't lose a player like Carrington and get better, especially in the Sun Belt. His running mate, Bryan Hall (30 tkls, 6.5 tfls, 2.5 sacks), does return and will be joined by junior Dorvus Woods (23 tkls, 3 tfls, 1.5 sacks, 2 PBUs), who has played well in rotation. Two new Ends will start this year too, with juniors Jeremy Gibson (22 tkls, 3 tfls, 3 sacks) and Justin Robertson (6 tkls) getting the nod. Gibson has shown flashes as a pass rusher. Depth is thin and the line will regress this season. SLB Demario Davis (80 tkls, 5 tfls, 3 sacks, 1 PBU, 1 INT) returns to lead an experienced Linebacker corps. Senior WLB Javon McKinnon (53 tkls, .5 tfl) has been a regular starter as a reserve and gets the job full-time this season. Sophomore Nick Nelms (10 tkls, 1 tfl, 1 INT) mans the Strongside. Depth is strong and experienced. Both Safeties are back – SS Kelcie McCray (58 tkls, 4.5 tfls, 4 PBUs, 4 INTs) and FS MD Jennings (64 tkls, .5 tfl, 6 PBUs, 1 INT), who was 1st Team SBC. Two new corners, JUCO Darron Edwards and senior Walter Moody (7 tkls, 1 PBU), take over and should be solid. There is good depth too, and the unit could be even stronger in 2010.

Special Teams

The special teams unit loses all of its key players, and will be a major question mark going into the season. Freshman Brian Davsi gets first shot at Kicker after winning the job in the fall. Junior Neely Sullivent will punt. Henderson and redshirt freshman Carlos McCants will be the primary kick returners, with Henderson returning punts too. None of these players have any experience at their position. Kick and punt coverage units were excellent, and should continue in this regard.

Next Season

ASU are loaded with question marks going into this season, although while the run defense will be weaker, the team as a whole could be better. It might not make a difference with a tough OOC schedule. With a loss to Auburn already under their belt, the Red Wolves also play Louisville at home and Indiana and Navy away. In conference they travel to Louisiana-Lafayette, Troy, North Texas and FIU. With a killer OOC schedule, and some easier conference games away, ASU may struggle to match last season's four win total and Roberts could be looking for work in 2011, which could be a shame as the team may be more competitive then.

Florida Atlantic

Last Year

QB Rusty Smith's last hurrah didn't quite go the way he'd hoped. After a poor 2-5 start, Smith's college career ended with an injury against Middle Tennessee. Jeff Van Camp stepped in and led them to three wins in their last five, but better things were expected of a team that finished 5-7 (5-3 SBC). It certainly wasn't the offense's fault, they finish 15th in total yardage, but the defense was awful and couldn't stop anyone from running or passing and managed only 12 sacks and 5 interceptions. Graduation cleaned out the offense, leaving two starters, and they may slip back into the pack. On the plus side, Smith's heroics made him the first draft pick in FAU's short history.

Offense

Van Camp (59.2% comp, 1372 yds, 12 TDs, 2 INTs) was excellent in his closing stint; he threw both picks in his first game, and finally becomes the starter this season. Sophomore David Kooi (50% comp, 69 yds) will back him up. Running Back is in good shape with the return of Alfred Morris (263-1392-11). He's a tough runner who also moves well and should contend for Sun Belt honors after being voted 1st Team SBC last season. Junior Willie Floyd missed last season through injury, but will back up Morris. Xavier Stinson (30-94-0) returns at Fullback. The runners will have their work cut out for them with a completely new offensive line paving the way. Four sophomores and freshman RG Eric Hansen make up the new unit. LT Troy Niblack played in 8 last season, while LG Andy Czuprynski started 1 and played in 11. The Center will be Jordan Sessa, who played in 4 and Joseph Bailey, who did not play last year, will man the Right Tackle. The depth is even more inexperienced and this unit is a big question mark going into the season. Lester Jean (38-501-4) will returns at one receiver spot, and will be joined by Avery Holley (22-224-1). There is some good potential in reserve, but none of the players are experienced. TE Rob Housler redshirted last season but caught 32 passes for 519 yards and 4 TDs in 2008. Junior Darian Williams (14-214-2) will back him up. If the youth movement on offense is successful, they have the talent to compete in the Sun Belt. That's a big "if" though.

Defense

Eight starters return on defense, but they need a drastic improvement overt last season. More was expected of sophomore DE Kevin Cyrille (40 tkls, 8.5 tfls, 3 sacks, 2 PBUs) last season, but he didn't quite live up to expectations. He'll get another chance this season. DT Dino Cox (24tkls, 2 tfls, 3 sacks) also returns, but needs to get a better push up front. Sophomore DT Jimmy Jean (1 tkl) and junior DE Jamaire Johnson (14 tkls, 2 tfls, 1 PBU) will get a chance to show their stuff this season. They have some solid depth and should be better this season. MLB Michael Lockley (97 tkls, 7.5 tfls, 3 PBUs) and SLB Malik Eugene (34 tkls, 4 tfls, 1 PBU) could do more with better help from up front. This season, sophomore Alex Pattee will join them at WLB. The have some solid experience in reserve and should be much tougher this season. The whole secondary returns, but last season they allowed a 67.4 completion percentage to go with their 5 picks. It's not all their fault, the lack of a pass rush made their job tougher. It's a vicious circle though, as good coverage can help the pressure too, so they need to reach a happy medium. Tavious Polo (42 tkls, 4 tfls, 2 PBUs, 1 INT) and Tarvoris Hill (27 tkls, 1 tfl, 1 PBU, 1 INT) are the Corners, with Marcus Bartels (112 tkls, 5 tfls, 3 PBUs, 1 INT) and Ed Alexander (66 tkls, .5 tfl, 5 PBUs) at SS and FS respectively. The reserves got some valuable playing time last season and will be better prepared this season. Coach Howard Schnellenberger has worked hard at improving the defense's toughness this offseason and it should be a much improved unit in 2010.

Special Teams

Auburn transfer Ross Gornall missed 5 PATs last season but hit 8 of 12 FGs (42 long). He should be better this season. Punter Mickey Groody (40.6 gross, 34.4 net) is a placement expert and also returns. Polo returned kicks (17.0 ypr) and punts (5.3 ypr) last year but could a lot better. The coverage teams were okay, but they could tighten up a little on kicks. The unit should be better this season.

Next Season

This could be a tough season for the Owls. They have a fantastic coach in Schnellenberger, and they pull in some good local talent, but the offensive line and a defense that is essentially unchanged could hamper them this season. The OOC schedule is tough. They beat UAB, but also travel to Michigan State (a supposed home game), South Florida and Texas. Within the conference, they travel to ULM, Arkansas State, Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. Matching their 5 win season of last year will be tough; a bowl game may be a pipe dream.

Florida International

Last Year

In the 8 years of the Golden Panthers' existence, they've won just 24 games. Last season's 3-9 (3-5) SBC record was average then by that standard. They had expected better, but the offense, in particular the running game, never got going and the defense couldn't stop anyone. They did play hard most of the season, but didn't have the depth to stay the course. Things were looking better for this season when a couple of transfers, QB Wesley Carroll from Mississippi State and Jeremiah Harden from Syracuse, became eligible to play. Then the team was rocked by the murder of Kendall Berry, their best Running Back in the second half of the season. If Coach Mario Cristobal can keep the team focused, some decent recruiting has strengthened the team enough to remain competitive throughout the year.

Offense

Carroll was a local hero in High School, and returns to try and reclaim that glory. He's a decent passer with some mobility, and could be successful from the get-go. Sometime-starter Wayne Younger (37.9% comp, 257 yds, 4 INTs) will back him up. Harden has looked good at Running Back from the moment he arrived and will be counted on this season. Darriet Perry (103-301-3) started five games last season and has gotten himself into better shape this season. He will be the primary reserve and will also see plenty of carries. Brad Serini returns at Center and is a multi-year starter who has twice been named 2nd Team SBC. Junior James Wiggins will step in at LT but has yet to play a down at this level. Beside him at Guard will be sophomore Giancarlo Revilla who backed up at Center last season. On the right, the Guard will be senior Cedric Mack, who started 4 games there last season, and the Tackle will be sophomore Dave Istanich, who started 6 games as a freshman. Frequent injuries means the reserves have experience, but this line may struggle again this season. The receiving corps will be solid this season. Ty Hilton (57-632-5) gets better every season and is a 2-time 1st Team SBC choice. He will be joined by experienced Greg Ellingson (34-528-4). Jason Frierson (30-368-2) will return to the 3rd spot. There are capable reserves just awaiting their chance. Jonathon Faucher (11-96-0) returns at TE. Junior Dudley LaPorte will see plenty of time as the primary backup.

Defense

The defense was ranked 119th in total yardage and 111th in scoring last season and needless to say this has to improve. A new defensive co-ordinator, Geoff Collins, was brought in to try and turn things around. Only three startersreturn, but he does have a few players to work with. The line needs to be replaced completely, but sophomore End Tourek Williams (28 tkls, 4 tfls, 1 sack, 1 PBU) should be a good place to start. He finished the season strongly last season. Opposite him will be senior Jarvis Wilson (35 tkls, 4.5 tfls), who started four games last season. The Tackles will be sophomores Kasey Smith (12 tkls) and Joshua Forney (4 tkls, .5 tfl, 1 PBU). There is a lack of experience throughout the depth chart, but the group should improve this year. Toronto Smith (50 tkls, 5.5 tfls, 3.5 sacks, 2 PBUs, 1 INT) is back at SLB and can make some plays, but two new guys will start alongside him this season. Junior Aaron Davis (59 tkls, 5 tfls, 2.5 sacks, 1 PBU) will man the middle after doing well in five starts last season. The WLB will be sophomore Pooh Bear Mars (6 tkls). This should be a better group with some solid depth. The secondary returns Corner Anthony Gaitor (45 tkls, 4.5 tfls, 6 PBUs, 2 INTs), who was 2nd Team SBC last year, and FS Jonathon Cyprien (78 tkls, 1.5 tfls, 3 PBUs, 1 INT). senior Dez Johnson (22 tkls, 3 PBUs) steps in at Corner. He has played regularly over his time here. The SS will be senior Ashlyn Parker (7 tkls, 1 tfl). There is some talent and experience among the reserves and this unit should be better, as should the entire defense.

Special Teams

Sophomore Jack Griffin will be the new Kicker, but hasn't kicked in a game yet. Another transfer, Josh Brisk from Duquesne, will take over as Punter. Hilton (28.8 ypr, 1 TD) and Wayne Times (21.8 ypr) will return kicks again, with Frierson (12.2 ypr) doing a good job on punts. Coverage teams were excellent. If the two new specialists can perform, this will be an excellent unit again this season.

Next Season

Cristobal has done a good job turning this team into one that will scrap for every yard, but they're still a team most of their opponents can mark off as a "W". They tend to play OOC schedule's that would ruin anyone's season, and this year is no different. They start at home to Rutgers then have trips to Texas A&M, Maryland and Pittsburgh. That's a likely 0-4 start to the season. Within the conference, they travel to North Texas, Florida Atlantic, Troy and Louisiana-Lafayette. In addition, 5 of their away games come in a 6 game stretch. They might spring a surprise or two this season, but 3 or 4 wins is the best they could hope for. The team does seem to be headed in the right direction though. It remains to be seen whether Cristobal will still be at the helm.

Louisiana-Lafayette

Last Year

Since Coach Ricky Bustle took over in 2002, the Ragin' Cajuns have had four 6-win seasons, but have never stepped it up to win more. Tough OOC schedules don't help, but poor defenses play a factor too. The offenses are usually good, although run-based, but last season no back was particularly effective and a committee approach wasn't the answer. The passing game was good and the offensive line was solid, and the defense did muster 26 turnovers, but the net result was a 6-6 (4-4 SBC) season. A win over Kansas State was good, but the team just continues to aspire to mediocrity. If they don't start winning more soon, Bustle could be gone.

Offense

Junior Chris Masson (59.5% comp, 2406 yds, 10 TDs, 8 INT) stepped in last season and had a solid season. His mobility (62-192-6) is an asset too. Sophomore Blaine Gautier (52.9% comp, 119 yds, 1 TD) is highly regarded and will back up Masson again this season. With no Back grasping the opportunity to start in the offseason, a committee approach will be in effect again. Julian Shankle (14-38-1) will be the nominal starter, but freshman Robert Walker and sophomore Draylon Booker (15-30-0) will get carries too. Walker was struggling with an injury in camp, and may take over full-time during the season. Senior Matt Desormeaux (1-(-1)-0) will be the Fullback, but watch for Yobes Walker (116-412-2), the leading returning rusher. He may play some Tailback again. Graduation has robbed the offensive line of some premium talent, and the unit will be a question mark going into the season. Ian Burks is a multi-year starter, but moves to Center this season. RT Jonathon Decoster was 2nd Team SBC last season. The new guys are senior LT Colin Windsor, who has played mostly as a reserve, sophomore LG Leonardo Bates, who played in 4 games, and sophomore RG Jaron Odom, who played in 11 games and started 1. There are some experienced reserves, and if the new line gels quickly, the running attack could be back to its dangerous self this season. Marlin Miller (37-325-2) is a decent receiver, but it is hoped a big-play target can step up. Pierre Hill (14-174-1) gets first shot. There is some good potential in reserve, but it has yet to be fully realised. TE Ladarius Green (32-533-2) is one of the best receiving TEs in the country. Sophomore Brandon Williams will back him up. This success of this offense hinges on the line, but a Running Back could step forward too.

Defense

This is a gambling unit that will give up big plays, but also make them. Bustle has stressed better tackling this season, but blitzing will still be a big factor. Seven starters return, and the unit should be better this season. Derreck Dean (33 tkls, 2.5 tfls) returns at one Tackle spot, and will be backed up by Sharrick Moore (8 tkls, 3 tfls, 2 PBUs), who started a few games last season. DE Terrell Richardson (19 tkls, 2 tfls, 2 PBUs) didn't do much last season, but gets another shot this year. The other Tackle will be senior Jordan Topp (22 tkls, 2 tfls), and junior Nate Douglas steps in at End after missing all of last season. He was solid in '08. Depth is pretty good, and the line should improve this season. Grant Fleming (89 tkls, 1 tfl, 1 PBU, 1 INT) moves inside from SLB this season and should be useful. WLB Daylon McCoy (55 tkls, 3 tfls, 1.5 sacks, 2 PBUs) also returns and has been reliable the last couple of years. The new SLB will be junior Devon Lewis-Buchanan (24 tkls, 1 PBU) who has some experience. There is some experience in reserve. Both Corners are back and are a decent pair. Orkeys Auriene (45 tkls, 6 PBUs, 2 INTs) and Dwight Bentley (58 tkls, 1.5 tfls, 1 sack, 5 PBUs, 3 INTs) could be even more effective with a better pass rush. Bentley was 1st Team SBC last season. Junior Lance Kelley (32 tkls, 2 tfls, 4 PBUs, 2 INTs) did a good job while starting 4 games at SS last season. He takes over full-time this season. The new FS will be senior Maurice Rolle (33 tkls,3 PBUs, 3 INTs), who started 5 games. This secondary should be rock solid in 2010. Look for the defense to take a step forward this season.

Special Teams

Kicker Tyler Albrecht (30/32 PATs, 8/11 FGs – 49 long) kicked a game-winning 48 yarder against K-State and should be reliable again this season. Punter Spencer Ortego (40.6 gross, 37.6 net) was 1st Team SBC and is a valuable defensive weapon. Miller (19.1 ypr) and Javone Lawson will return kicks this season, but need to improve, as does PR Orkeys Auriene (9.0 ypr). The coverage teams were very good, and Bustle's special teams units have a penchant for blocking kicks. They need to work on their returns, but the whole unit should be good again in 2010.

Next Season

ULL's annual attempt to pass 6 wins has some question marks on offense (Backs, O-Line), but is possibly the best team Bustle has had in some time. The OOC schedule is typically brutal – at Georgia (which they've lost), home to Oklahoma State, at Ohio (winnable) and home to Ole Miss. They're well spread out over the season, so health shouldn't be an issue in conference play. Their 4 away games in Sun Belt play are North Texas, Troy, Florida Atlantic and ULM. Troy will be the toughest match there. The Cajuns should do well in conference play, maybe 5 wins, but the usual tough BCS foes will probably mean another 6 win season at best this year.

Louisiana-Monroe

Last Year

Last season, the Warhawks had a solid team loaded with quality seniors on offense and defense, yet still only finished 6-6 (5-3 SBC). This cost Coach Charlie Weatherbie his job, and Todd Berry, who had a less than stellar 5-36 stint at Army, was brought in to replace him. He takes over a team that wasn't particularly bad or good in any department. He also only gets 4 starters returning on either side of the ball. While the returnees are good players, the replacements for the graduates are unproven for the most part. The offensive and defensive schemes will remain relatively intact, but whether Berry can succeed where Weatherbie failed remains to be seen.

Offense

Two QBs split the job last season and neither really took advantage of the opportunity. Trey Revell (57.6% comp, 1739 yds, 12 TDs, 12 INTs) started brightly but faded down the stretch, but he was the more mobile (95-354-5) of the two. Cody Wells (55.7 % comp, 762 yds, 6 TDs, 7 INTs) started two and played in a number of others. In the offseason though, redshirt freshman Kolton Browning beat them both out and will start this season. Wells will back him up. RB Frank Goodin (219-1126-13) is a nice fallback option for whoever plays QB. He was 2nd Team SBC last season, but should push for 1st Team honors this year. Redshirt Freshman Jyruss Edwards will be the primary reserve. Senior Rodney Lovett (73-273-2) will see action too. Only two starters return from last season's offensive line, but LG Justin Roberts and RG Jonathon Gill are good ones. JUCOs Patrick Dvoracek and Ryan McCaul take over at LT and Center respectively. Anthony Montgomery moves in at Right Tackle but he has no previous experience. The reserves have potential but haven't had much playing time either. Receiver is another question mark, with the top two graduating. Luther Ambrose (32-455-4) returns to provide speed at one spot. The other two will be junior Anthony McCall (7-71-1) and redshirt freshman Tavarese Maye. McCall had an unimpressive sophomore season after flashing great potential as a freshman. There isn't much experience in reserve either. TE Alvin Jordan (24-250-2) is a decent safety valve and may see more balls come his way this season. Redshirt freshman Kevin Steed will back him up. Aside from Goodin and Ambrose, this offense is a concern this year.

Defense

This unit will require some serious rebuilding and may not be ready to compete this season. There is some talent to build on though. 1st Team SBC DE Troy Evans (32 tkls, 2 tfls, 6.5 sacks, 4 PBUS) is the lone returning starter and a good pass rusher. Junior Ken Dorsey (1 tkl, 1 tfl) will start opposite him. The Tackle will be senior Bryan Glenn (3 tkls). There is a troubling lack of experience, despite some potentially good reserves. Theo Smith (57 tkls, 2.5 tfls, 3.5 sacks, 4 PBUs, 1 INT) returns at OLB and should be the leader of the defense. Sophomore Cameron Blakes (9 tkls) will start opposite him while junior Jason Edwards (19tkls) will line up inside. There are mostly freshmen and sophomores on the depth chart too. The secondary could be okay this season with two returning starters – Corner Nate Brown (49 tkls, 3 tfls, 6 PBUs, 2 INTs) and SS Darius Prelow (62 tkls, 2 tfls, 1 sack, 12 PBUs), who was 3rd Team SBC. Sophomore Robert Nelson (6 tkls, 1 PBU) will step in as the other corner alongside sophomore FS Khairi Usher (3 tkls) and senior Rover Alex Ibe (23 tkls, .5 tfl, 1.5 sacks). The depth has few players who've played in a game. The defense will struggle, especially early, but if their confidence isn't ruined, they could get better as the season goes on.

Special Teams

Radi Jabour (35/38 PATs, 12/20 FGs – 48 long) returns at Kicker but hasn't been reliable and may be yanked in favor of freshman Conner Fryoux if he doesn't show more consistency. The new Punter will be redshirt freshman Aaron Munoz. Ambrose (21.9) will return kicks again this season, alongside Maye, who will also return punts. Ambose has the ability to make more big plays. They allowed 3 TDs returns (2 kicks, 1 punt), but were solid otherwise. The unit as a whole has been inconsistent but should improve this season.

Next Season

Berry has a tough road ahead of him, especially in his first season. Despite some decent returning players, only a couple are standouts. The lack of seniors as starters means this should be a learning year for the starting unit. The OOC schedule is unforgiving too – Arkansas in Little Rock, Southeast Louisiana at home (a breather), at Auburn and at LSU. The away games in conference aren't terrible though, with trips to Arkansas State, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee and FIU. ULM isn't so bad that they'll go undefeated, but 2-3 wins looks likely. They will be a much better team in 2011.

Middle Tennessee

Last Year

After three mediocre seasons, Coach Rick Stockstill turned the Blue Raiders into a monster last season, finishing 10-3 (7-1 SBC) and beating Southern Miss in the New Orleans Bowl. Despite this, they still managed to fall short of winning the Sun Belt due to their apparent inability to beat Troy. Stockstill is 0-4 against the Trojans and there doesn't seem to be a plausible reason for this. Last year, the offense, defense and special teams were all top notch. QB Dwight Dasher is the key to the offense – he's a superb dual threat runner who can take over a game, just like their bowl win. Unfortunately, he's been suspended by the NCAA and will miss some time. Still, with seven starters returning on offense and 6 on defense, MTSU are favored to win the Sun Belt this year. All they need to do is get past Troy.

Offense

Dasher is a threat as both a passer (54.9% comp, 2789 yds, 23 TDs, 14 INTs) and a runner (224-1154-13) and the offense is a far lesser threat without him. Sophomore Logan Kilgore will start the season, but return to the bench when Dasher returns. The backfield is loaded with talent, among them Phillip Tanner (18-83-1) returning from an injury that cost him all but two games last season. DD Kyles (139-857-3) was the second leading rusher last season and expect Benjamin Cunningham (46-173-2) to get carries too. Four members of last year's offensive line are back – LT Mike Williams and RT Mark Fisher are multi-year starters. LG Brandon McLeroy started 18 games over the last two years, while last year's RG Alex Stuart moves to Center. Sophomore Preston Bailey, a top recruit who transferred from Tennessee, will replace him. There is some good depth among the reserves. Wide receiver could be a concern with only Garrett Andrews (35-530-4) and Sancho McDonald (24-255-2) having any real experience. Junior Harold Turner (14-223-3) and JUCO Tyler Mason will man the other two spots. The offense uses four receivers and there isn't much experience in reserve. Stockstill brought in some JUCOs to bolster depth. The team needs some receivers to step up to take the pressure off the running game, but with Dasher at the helm, they always have a chance.

Defense

The defense loses five starters that were 1st or 2nd Team SBC last season and may struggle to replace them. Jamari Lattimore (47 tkls, 4 tfls, 5.5 sacks, 2 PBUs, 1 INT) was 2nd Team SBC last season and returns at one End this season. DT Dwight Smith (22 tkls, 2 tfls, 1 PBU) is also back. The new Tackle will be junior SaCoby Carter (13 tkls, 3.5 tfls, 1 sack) who has played regularly. Senior Emmanuel Perez (31 tkls, 3 tfls, 2.5 sacks, 1 PBU) has started before and steps in at End this season. There is some good depth, but the line doesn't have talent of last year's unit. MLB Antwan Davis (52 tkls, 2 tfls, 1 sack, 1 PBU) is the only returning starter. He moves inside from SLB this year. Junior Darin Davis (38 tkls, 2.5 tfls, 1 PBU) moves onto his vacated spot, with sophomore Justin Jones (26 tkls, 2 tfls, 1 sack, 1 PBU) at WLB. Despite the lack of experience, there is increased speed and athleticism and this unit could be better than last year's by the end of the season. The secondary should be even better, with three returning starters. SS Kevin Brown (63 tkls, 7 PBUs, 4 INTs) and FS Jeremy Kellem (64 tkls, 4.5 tfls, 3 sacks, 1 PBU, 3 INTs) will lock down the middle of the field. Brown 2nd Team SBC and Kellem was 1st last season. CB Rod Issac (72 tkls, 5.5 tfls, 7 PBUs) will be a lock on one side, while JUCO Arness Ikner steps straight in at the other spot. With some talent in reserve, this should be the best secondary in the Sun Belt this year. The defense will take a step back this season due to graduation, but should still be tough.

Special Teams

Kicker Alan Gendreau (50/51 PATs, 18/22 FGs – 48 long) was 1st Team SBC last year and one of the better Kickers in the country. A new Punter is needed, and junior Nathaniel Toulson (1-52 last year) gets first crack at the job. Tanner and Malcolm Beyah will return kicks this season, with Ikner returning punts. They have the talent to rip off some big plays. Coverage units were average, and each allowed a TD. Gendreau will be good again this season, but the rest of the unit is up in the air.

Next Season

How long Dasher is out will directly impact this team's success this season. They've already lost to Minnesota, but have FCS Austin Peay at home next. A trip to Memphis and a later trip to Georgia Tech round out the OOC schedule. The away games in-conference are very manageable – Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas State, Western Kentucky, and FIU. The big game is October 5th at home to Troy, who is even more depleted. If they lose again, no matter how well the Blue Raiders do this season will leave a sour taste in their mouths.

North Texas

Last Year

Coach Todd Dodge has only won 5 games in his three years here and is definitely on the hot seat this year. Last season though showed an improvement in the team, though, with six losses by a TD or less. The offense was solid, but lacked a deep threat in the passing game and had to rely on short passes. The defense was poor all season and was the primary reason for their losses, but the special teams made some costly mistakes too. Dodge will probably need to win at least six games (at least he thinks so), but can they do it, even with a more mature team?

Offense

The pounding QB Riley Dodge has taken over the last couple of years have weakened his arm to the degree that he moved to receiver in the offseason. Nathan Tune (64.5% comp, 646 yds, 5 TDs, 2 INTs), who started two games last season, will replace him. He's a decent passer, but not the running threat Dodge is. He'll be backed up by sophomore Derek Thompson (3-3-60-1-0). Dodge's experience and consistency will be missed though. RB Lawrence Dunbar exploded onto the scene in his sophomore scene, rushing for 1378 yards and 17 TDs on 200 carries. He'll be counted on even more with the inexperience and Quarterback. Junior James Hamilton (11-47-1) will back him up and should get more carries this season. There is good news with the return of four offensive line starters from last season's excellent unit (12 sacks, 5.3 ypc). 1st Team SBC Tackles Victor Gill on the left and Esteban Santiago opposite him lead the way. C JJ Johnson and LG Kelvin Drake are multi-year starters. Junior RG Matt Tomlinson, who played regularly last season, will be the new addition. The depth is solid but may not hold up if injuries strike. Most of their top receivers from last year return, but someone who can stretch the field needs to be found. Jamaal Jackson (71-701-6) led the team last year and was 1st Team SBC. Darius Carey (57-509-4) also started last year and Oklahoma-transfer Tyler Stradford and JUCO Chris Bynes will join him this year. The depth is excellent due to many of last season's regulars in reserve. Dunbar (28-300-2) is a valuable receiver out of the backfield. The new QB may take time to get acclimated, but this offense will be able to move the chains regularly next season.

Defense

Two starters return up front from last season's unit, but are expected to get more of a push, particularly against the run. DE Brandon Akpunku (47 tkls, 5.5 tfls, 6 sacks), who was 2nd Team SBC, and DT Shavod Atkinson (33 tkls, 1.5 tfls, 2 sacks) will be joined by 4 game starter KC Obi (26 tkls, 4 tfls) and Kelvin Jackson (16tkls, 1 tfl,1 PBU), who started 6 games. There are experienced reserves, and while this is the Mean Green's best D-Line in Dodge's stint here, there isn't much competition. MLB AJ Penson 51 tkls, 2.5 tfls, 1 PBU) started the last 6 games last season and carries on in that role this year. He started in '08 too. 2nd Team SBC OLB Craig Robertson (107 tkls, 1.5 tfls, 1.5 sacks, 3 PBUs, 1 INT) was a tackling machine last year, but needs to make more behind the line of scrimmage. OLB Jeremy Phillips (37 tkls, 2.5 tfls, 1 PBU, 1 INT) will join them after starting 3 games. There is some decent depth too, so the unit should improve this year. The secondary should improve with three starters returning. 2nd Team SBC FS DaWaylon Cook (85 tkls, 1 tfl, 3 PBUs) returns along with SS Ira Smith (53 tkls, .5 tfl, 2 PBUs, 1 INT). Corner Royce Hill (47 tkls, 2 tfls, 2 PBUs, 3 INTs) returns to lock down one spot and will be joined this season by JUCO D'Leon McCord. The reserves aren't too experienced, but have talent. The defense should be better this year, but whether it can hold up over the course of the season is in doubt.

Special Teams

The biggest problem on special teams last season was having 8 kicks blocked. That needs to be rectified to give them a chance in close games. Sophomore Trent Deans (0/1 PATs) takes over for departed Kicker Jeremy Knott who was reliable, blocked kicks aside. Will Atterberry (39.0 gross, 31.1 net) remains the Punter despite a less than stellar season. Jackson is a fine kick returner and will be joined by the more than capable Smith. Royce Hill will return punts. Kick coverage was okay, but punt coverage needs some work. Returners aside, this unit is a concern heading into the season.

Next Season

There's a lot going for the Mean Green in 2010. They have the most returning starters, a potential All-SBC rusher, a solid receiving corps and the guts of their offensive line returning. They have some quality defenders back and should improve in that department. The special teams need work, but have potential. If Tune can maintain the level he played at in a brief stint last year for the season, watch out. The OOC schedule is okay. They lost to Clemson, despite moving the ball and generally playing well, and have in-state rival Rice at home. A trip to Army and a home against Kansas State at the end of the season rounds it out. In conference, they travel to FAU, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee and Louisiana-Monroe. NT is not quite ready to contend for the division, and a bowl game is unlikely for most bowl-eligible Sun Belt teams, but Dodge's hope for a six-win season could absolutely be realised.

Troy

Last Year

Troy has owned the Sun Belt the last four years, winning the title in each of them. The previous incarnations have revolved around sound defense and a functional offense, but last year the defense vanished, finishing 104th nationally in total defense. No problem – QB Levi Brown had a fine senior season, throwing for 4254 yds and 23 TDs, and led them to a 9-4 (8-0) SBC and a close loss to Central Michigan in the GMAC Bowl. Whether they can win a 5th consecutive title is a question. Brown is gone, as is most of the defense, which included an NFL quality defensive line. Coach Larry Blakeney has shown he can get the job done at this level, and the Trojans should be in the running again, but will they?

Offense

With Brown gone, the battle to replace him was between experienced junior Jamie Hampton and redshirt freshman Corey Robinson. Both are dual-threats who are suited to the offensive system. The contest went to fall camp, but Robinson won the job. Expect Hampton to step in he struggles though. Dantavious Parker (19-10-87-0-0, 28-154-2) will come in some running formations. At Running Back, DuJuan Harris (151-583-10) and Shawn Southward (110-602-12) split the load last year and will do so again this season. Both Tackles, James Brown on the left and Kyle Wilborn on the right, and C Tyler Clark, who was a 1st Team SBC choice at Left Guard last season, return. The Guards will be new – redshirt freshman LG Jay Stansberry and experienced senior RG Tyler Graves. The depth is inexperienced and the unit may suffer a dropoff this season, although a mobile QB will help. Troy mostly runs a four receiver set, and returns to of last year's starters, who happened to lead the team in receiving. Jerrel Jernigan (71-1101-4) was 1st Team SBC and is also a dangerous runner (40-266-1). Tebiarus Gill (47-581-6) is a fine number two target and was voted 3rd Team SBC. Joining them this season will be seniors Austin Silvoy (13-182-0) and Jason Bruce (24-311-2). The reserves are excellent – this is probably the deepest group of receivers in the Sun Belt. When the team needs a TE, they could do worse than senior Donnie Crosby. Sophomore DJ Taylor is the H-Back. If Robinson gets it going quickly, this offense will be explosive again this season. The Backs are good enough to carry the load until he does.

Defense

Despite only three returning starters, the Trojans have enough quality in reserve to improve on last year's lowly rankings. The line will have few (relatively) new faces. Seniors Emmanuel Dudley and Riley Flowers both missed last season through injury, but will man the middle in 2010. Sophomore Jonathon Massoquai, a redshirt last season, and senior Mario Addison (32 tkls, 3.5 tfls, 2.5 sacks) will be the ends. There is good depth and the unit should be solid this year. There are some medical concerns with the first-team though. Daniel Sheffield (54 tkls, 1.5 tfls, 1 sack, 3 PBUs) returns at SLB, but the other starters graduated. Junior Xavier Lamb (38 tkls, .5 tfl) takes over at MLB after some decent reserve work last year. The WLB is junior Donnell Golden (37 tkls, .5 tfls, 1 sack, 1 PBU, 1 INT) who has started five games over the last two seasons. The depth is talented but lacks experience and injuries could create problems. The secondary returns two starters, but one will be changing position. Barry Valcin (51 tkls, 2 tfls, 5 PBUs, 1 INT) played corner last season but was recruited as a Free Safety and will move there this season. The other corner, Bryan Willis (73 tkls, .5 tfls, 12 PBUs, 4 INTs), is staying put after being voted 2nd Team SBC last year. Joining him this year will be freshman Chris Pickett, who was great in the offseason. The Strong Safety will be senior Willard Ross (26 tkls), who started 2 games last year. There is some good talent, but again reserve strength is an issue. The defense will be solid if it remains healthy, but looks like it could be starter thin, D-Line excepted.

Special Teams

Kicker Michael Taylor (43/44 PATs, 11/14 FGs – 46 long) was reliable last season and returns, and the same applies to Punter Will Goggans (40.8 gross, 37.5 net). Jernigan (39-897-0) and Harris will form a solid kick return combo, with Jernigan also returning punts. Kick coverage was poor and allowed a TD, but the punt squad was excellent. If they can tighten up on the kick returns, this unit should be good next year.

Next Season

One thing is certain, Troy will contend for the Sun Belt again next season. They may have less talent than in recent years (on offense anyway), but they still more talented than the rest of the conference, with the exception of Middle Tennessee (and maybe FAU). They have a mixed OOC schedule – they already beat Bowling Green, but travel to Oklahoma State, Alabama-Birmingham and South Carolina. In-conference, the Trojans have trips to Middle Tennessee, Louisiana-Monroe, North Texas and FAU. A large influx of JUCOs and transfers will help restock the talent level, but there may not be "one for the thumb" this season.

Western Kentucky

Last Year

After winning just two games in '08 and losing every game last season, David Elson was fired and Coach Willie Taggart was brought in. Taggart is a Hilltoppers' Hall of Fame player and was an assistant coach there for 8 years, including offensive co-ordinator and assistant Head Coach. He knows the lie of the land and has said all the right things since taking over. The team seems far removed from the glory of days 2002 when the won the FCS National Championship, and need a lot of work to compete in the tough Sun Belt. The offense was 101st in total yardage, while the defense was118th. They have some decent players, most noteworthy is Running Back Bobby Rainey whom the offense the will revolve around this season. The offensive and defensive systems are changing to more traditional sets and it will be interesting to see how the personnel fit. A good recruiting class was brought in, and many may see action early on too.

Offense

QB Kawaun Jakes (60.7% comp, 1516 yds, 9 TDs, 9 INTs) started the last eight games of the season and will keep the job this year, although he's more of a dual-threat (124-366-5 rushing) and suited to the spread. JUCO Matt Peleasa was brought in this year, and suits the new offense better – expect him to see the field quickly if Jakes struggles. Rainey (144-939-6) won't break a lot of big runs, but he's tough inside and shifty enough to be effective. Junior Braxston Miller (3-8-0), a former Linebacker, will back him up. The Fullback will be senior Rod Johnson. How the Offensive Line reacts to the new system will be interesting, but four starters back should help with experience. LT Wes Jeffries was 3rd Team SBC. LG Mychal Patterson, RG Adam Smith and RT Preston King are also back. Redshirt freshman Sean Conway takes over at Center. Depth is thin on experience and the line must stay healthy or there could be problems. Last season, the receivers didn't play up to their potential and lose the top player this season. Marcus Vasquez (19-176-2) and Quinterrance Cooper (20-151-0) will man the two starting spots this year and should do better. There is both experience and talent in the reserves too. Underachieving was not a concern with TE Jack Doyle (37-365-1), who was 2nd on the team in receptions and yards. Junior Tristan Jones (4-61-0) has started regularly over the last two years and will back him up. Expect him to see plenty of action in twin-TE sets. This is an experience offense now, regardless of thechange in system, and they have enough talent to pick off a couple of their conference foes this season.

Defense

The Hilltoppers have a number of players returning, both full-time starters and players who have started. Whether they can adapt to the new system remains to be seen, but an extra defensive lineman can only help their abject run defense (118th). Kenny Martin (21 tkls, 1 tfl) returns at Tackle after struggling to hold the fort on his own. He'll be helped this season by sophomore Jamarcus Allen (6 tkls, .5 tfls), who started four games before missing the rest of the season with injury. Jared Clendenin (40 tkls, 2.5 tfls, 1 sack, 3 PBUs) should be more successful with better support from his running mates. Former Linebacker, sophomore Quanterus Smith (12 tkls, 1 tfl) moves up to End opposite him. There is some depth, but the talent isn't great. Even so, the line should still be better. Thomas Majors (101 tkls, 3 tfls, 2 PBUs, 1 INT) returns at MLB. He would get more recognition on a better team. SLB Chris Bullard (46 tkls, 1.5 tfls, 1 PBU) started 9 games last year and will be one to watch this season. Orlando Misaalefua (48 tkls, 1 tfl) returns to Linebacker after a couple of seasons at Safety. His speed will be a great asset on the Weakside. Depth is good and they have some players with starting experience. With Misaalefua moving to WLB, only two starters return in the secondary. Jamal Forrest (32 tkls, 4 PBUs, 1 INT) had a tough freshman season at Corner, but will be better for it this year. Mark Santoro (91 tkls, 1.5 tfls, 2 PBUs) moves to Strong Safety from Free and looks like a potential playmaker. Junior Derrius Brooks moves from wide receiver and will start at the other Corner. The new Free Safety will be sophomore Kareem Peterson (57 tkls, 1 tfl, 1 sack), who started 2 games and played in 8 at Corner last year. There is experience among the reserves, but as the unit hasn't been particularly good, it may not be of benefit. The defense has been raving about the new system, so it will be interesting to see if they can perform much better in 2010.

Special Teams

Kicker Casey Tinius (100% PATs, 14/19 FGs – 47 long) was one of the bright spots for the Hilltoppers last season and is back for more. Former walk-one Hendrix Brakefield will be the new Punter. Willie McNeal and Vasquez will share all the return duties. Kick and punt coverage were mediocre at best. The unit should be okay in 2010 if Brakefield comes good. The new returners have the ability to make some plays.

Next Season

WKU's first two years in the FBS haven't exactly gone according to plan. These things take time, but as FAU have shown, success can happen within a few years. A good recruiting class and the enthusiasm that comes with a coaching change have created a buzz on campus. First the Hilltoppers have to survive a nasty OOC schedule in which they face Nebraska and Kentucky away, then home to Indiana and another trip, this time to South Florida. If they can survive relatively unscathed (and they played well in a loss to Nebraska), they should be able to pull off a couple of conference victories. Their away games are at FIU, Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas State and Troy. No-one's expecting them to make a bowl game or win the conference, but a couple of wins in the Sun Belt will boost their confidence for 2011.
